Finally….First Day

After two days in a row cancelled this week I was finally able to begin my scheduled student teaching experience. I was able to get a better understanding of the bearings of the school and meet a lot of the faculty including the principal. Today I observed 1st-5th grade. One thing that I found interesting is the school day is different then most schools I have been in, they start their day around 9:20 am and finish around 4:00 pm. It was nice to be able to see how Ms. W interacts with her students; for instance, she uses a singing bowl (bowl that makes sound using wood similar to wine glass and finger). When she uses this it signifies the students that it is time to listen and they shouldn't be doing anything else. She also has all of her tables numbered, which is incorporated into another technique she uses. While the students are cleaning up she designates one of the student to go around the room and look for the tables that have cleaned the best, the student then rates the tables from best to worst on the smart board. The students whose that are the cleaniest are dismissed from first. One thing that I am excited for is that Ms. W is starting to work with TAB (Teaching for Artistic Behavior), which allows for students to be able to have more freedom and choose their own projects. I look forward to having the opportunity to experiment with this type of classroom instruction. As for the classroom itself I observed that it is very clean and neat and everything is organized.

My reflection is going to be done by taking notes throughout the week and using those notes to reflect on this blog at the end of each week.
